5 Signs Your Small Business Website Needs a Refresh
· FUZE Media Partners

For a lot of small businesses, the website goes up, does its job for a while, and then quietly falls behind. Nobody decides to let it get stale. Life gets busy, the business changes, and the site stays the same. Meanwhile, it's still the first place many new customers go to decide whether to call you.
You don't need to rebuild every year. But if you recognize any of these five signs, your site is probably costing you more than you think.
1. It Loads Slowly
People are impatient online, especially on a phone. If your pages take a long time to appear, many visitors will simply hit the back button and try the next business in the search results.
Common causes are oversized photos, too many plug-ins or add-ons, and older website builders or themes that weren't made for today's devices. A quick test: open your site on your own phone over cellular data, not Wi-Fi, and count how long it takes before you can actually read something. If it feels slow to you, it feels slow to your customers too.
2. It Looks Dated
Design trends change, and visitors notice. Tiny text, crowded layouts, stretched photos, old fonts and colors that don't match your current signs or business cards all send the same message: this business might not be paying attention.
That isn't fair, but it's how first impressions work. A refresh doesn't have to be flashy. Clean layouts, readable type, good photos and plenty of white space go a long way. The goal is for your website to look like the business you are today.
3. It's Hard to Use on a Phone
If visitors have to pinch and zoom, scroll sideways, or tap tiny links that are too close together, your site isn't working for a big share of the people who find it. Buttons should be easy to tap, text should be readable without zooming, and your phone number should be one tap away.
Check your own site on a phone and try the three things customers do most: find out what you do, find out where or when you're available, and contact you. If any of those is a struggle, start there.
4. Key Information Is Missing or Wrong
This one is surprisingly common. Old hours, a service you no longer offer, a phone number that changed, a team member who left two years ago, a holiday notice from last winter. Every outdated detail makes visitors wonder what else is wrong.
Make a short list of what a new customer needs to know: what you do, who you serve, the area you cover, your hours, and how to reach you. Then make sure every one of those is easy to find and correct. Set a reminder to review it every few months.
5. There's No Clear Next Step
Every page should answer the question "What should I do now?" Call, book, request a quote, send a message, visit. If your site makes visitors hunt for the next step, many won't bother.
Pick the one action that matters most to your business and make it obvious: a clear button near the top of the page, repeated where it makes sense. Keep contact forms short. Ask only for what you actually need.
Where to Start
If your site shows several of these signs, you don't have to fix everything at once. A practical order:
- Fix wrong information first. It's quick and it matters most.
- Make the next step obvious on every page.
- Check the phone experience and fix anything that's hard to tap or read.
- Speed things up by resizing large images and removing what you don't use.
- Then look at the design so the site matches your brand today.
Sometimes a few targeted updates are enough. Other times the platform is so old that a fresh build is the simpler path in the long run. Either way, it helps to have someone look at the site with fresh eyes.
